What it's about

A strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated R in the US (restricted, under 17 requires an accompanying parent); 12 ans in France. zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Fear that never lets upThe dread is not saved for a few moments, it runs the whole way through. Long stretches play out in near darkness, the sound drops to nothing before slamming back, screaming faces fill the frame, and something growls just out of sight near the end. A child alone in the dark is a recurring image. Even teens who like horror will feel worn down by the length of it.
shown
Blood, knives and guns, earlyBlood is on the floor and smeared along a wall within the first six minutes, and it comes back later. Knives and handguns are held on screen, gunshots are heard in the dark, and there are brief scuffles. Nothing is lingered over, but the threat is physical and real, not fantasy.
shown
A brutal basement attackAround the middle of the film, several people are attacked in a dark basement, one of them dragged down while the others are pulled after him, with blood left on the ground. It is confusing and violent rather than explicit, and it is the scene most likely to stay with a younger viewer afterward.
said
Constant strong languageThe dialogue is heavily profane throughout, with the strongest four letter words used dozens of times and a similar level in the dubbed version. There are also put downs between characters. This alone puts it out of reach of younger kids.
shown
Drinking and drugs in the talkAlcohol and drugs come up repeatedly in conversation, someone is seen with a beer and characters smoke late in the film. It is talk and background rather than a subject the film examines, but it adds to the adult texture.

What the movie brings

A genuinely inventive premise: an ordinary door in an ordinary basement opening onto something that should not exist.
It rewards attention, since the rules of the place have to be worked out rather than explained.
The ending resolves, which gives teens somewhere to land after the tension.

Watching it together

Before

Say up front that the scary part is the waiting and the dark rather than the gore, and that pausing or stepping out is completely fine.

After

at 17 and up

What did the film leave unexplained on purpose, and did that make it scarier or just frustrating?
