How these guides are made

Every “what age” guide rests on a systematic reading of the whole work, scene by scene, with the same criteria for every title. Not the trailer, not the press, not other parents' opinions. Here is what we look at, how the age is decided, and what we refuse to do.

What we look at

A work is read in full, every episode included. For each fact we note whether it is shown or only said, how long it lasts and how insistently it returns. Facts fall into six families, plus a seventh for what the work brings.

The guide shows these facts, with their intensity, without telling the story.

What we do not do

Who validates, and how to correct

A person reads every guide before publication. They can raise the age when a scene calls for it, never lower it, and their reason is written on the guide.

If an age looks wrong to you, or you know a scene the guide leaves out, write to us: we read again, and the guide is corrected if you are right.
