What it's about

Based on the Pretty Little Liars series of young adult novels by Sara Shepard, the series follows the lives of four girls, Spencer, Hanna, Aria, and Emily, whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their queen bee, Alison. One year later, they begin receiving messages from someone using the name "A" who threatens to expose their secrets, including long-hidden ones they thought only Alison knew.

Why 14

• The official rating, firstRated TV-14 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, may be unsuitable for children under 14). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
  rule
• An assault stopped in timeIn the school locker room, a boy pins one of the girls against the lockers and won't let go even as she tells him to stop. A classmate pulls him off her before anything else happens. The scene is short, her fear is plain to see, and the show treats it as the assault it is.
• An anonymous stalker's threatsFor seven seasons, four friends get messages from someone who knows their secrets, watches their every move and threatens them. Online bullying and videos that spread around school come up again and again in the dialogue.
• Deaths, guns and bloodThe mystery starts with a friend who vanished, and the body count grows from there. There are guns, fights and injuries, including a girl with a bloody gash on her forehead, shown in close-up after a car crash.
• Held captive in the darkIn seasons 5 and 6, the girls are locked away underground. Their captor forces one of them, in tears, to choose between her friends. These episodes lean on fear and confinement more than on violence.
• Drinking, pills and a teacherThe girls drink, and one of them gets hooked on pills to keep up, until she ends up in rehab. Another falls for her teacher, a relationship the show plays as a romance: worth talking through with your teen.

What the series brings

• A suspense series about friendship and secrets that opens up talk about bullying, trust and the courage to ask for help.
