What it's about

All begins in a rundown bar outside of Paris where a regular man realizes he has a winning lottery ticket only to be shot in a crime that needs to be quickly covered up.

• Our readingNot rated in the US. We say 14: The film stops for nearly thirty seconds on a wound in close-up, without a word, and it spends four fifths of its running time in near darkness. A police officer builds a case to get what he wants. Nothing is gratuitous, but the bleakness never lets up, and you need the maturity to see that the film judges its characters rather than endorsing them.

• A wound held in close-upThe camera stops on an open wound and stays there, almost thirty seconds without a word, and blood is central on screen in several other moments. It is not gory for the thrill, but it is long enough to sit heavy with a younger viewer.
• Death, guns, and pressureA death opens the story and the word comes back again and again in the talk. Guns and a knife are handled, shots are heard, and there are scuffles between adults who are all cornered by the same money.
• Almost always in the darkFour fifths of the film plays in low light, with long night scenes, sudden bangs after silences and whispering that keeps you on edge. The unease never really lifts, which is the point, but it asks for some stamina.
• Constant strong languageThe swearing is heavy and continuous, more than eighty crude words across the film, the French equivalents of the strongest ones. It is the natural speech of a neighborhood bar, not aimed at anyone, but it is everywhere.
• A bar, drinks, cigarettesMuch of the story happens at the counter: beer in hand, rounds ordered, cigarettes lit again and again, with one passing mention of drugs. Drinking is part of the air these characters breathe rather than something the film celebrates.
• Adults in bed, a kissThere are kisses and bedroom moments between adults, filmed without explicitness, and a couple of coarse sexual words in passing. Nothing is dwelt on, but the register is adult throughout.
