not yetwith an adult, or to talk about afteralonethe sweet spot
The official US rating is TV-MA, and we never go below it. Alone from 17; from 16, with an adult or by talking about it afterwards.
The sweet spot: around 17-18, when you can recognise in these two friends the way men talk without ever saying they care about each other, and laugh at the jokes without taking them as a way to live. Why a sweet spot?
The trailer
What it's about
Hollywood actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been best friends for years, but a shocking family secret suggests their connection might be closer.
Why 17
The official rating, firstRated TV-MA in the US (mature audiences only). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Constant, hard profanityThe original dialogue is blunt and salty from the first minutes, with the strongest four letter words used dozens of times in a single half hour, plus name calling between the two leads. The French dub softens it a great deal; the English track does not.
Killing as a running jokeCharacters talk about killing, murder and getting shot again and again, mostly as banter, and guns are handled and fired on screen. But one death is not a joke and actually lands, which is a jolt if you came for the laughs.
Adult humor and a bare bodyThe comedy leans on sexual innuendo, talk of sleeping with someone and being naked, and a nude figure passes through a shot. Kisses and bedroom moments are brief but the register is clearly written for grown ups.
Drinking and smoking everywhereAlcohol is named throughout and poured on screen, cigarettes are lit repeatedly and casually, and a drug is mentioned in passing. None of it is questioned; it is simply the furniture of these men's lives.
Grief under the jokesBeneath the wisecracks sit real mourning, family cruelty and low moments of distress, including mockery aimed at people who cannot answer back. Younger viewers would catch the noise and miss the ache.
Loud, dark, fastThe show moves at a sprint with wall to wall talk, quick cutting, long stretches of near darkness, screaming faces and tense sound. It is more agitated than frightening, but it never lets up.
What the series brings
A warm look at a friendship that has outlasted everything else in two men's lives.
It asks what family really means: the blood you are given, or the people you choose.
It shows grown men finally saying out loud what they have avoided for decades.
Watching it together
Before
If you watch together, say up front that the constant jokes about killing are the characters' way of dodging a real grief that shows up later.
After
at 17 and up
Do you think blood makes a family, or is it the years you put in with someone?
