From 17, alone or with a parent.
Alone, or with you
The official US rating is R, and we never go below it. Alone from 17, and not before, even with an adult.
The sweet spot: around 17, when you start wondering whether what you see is real, and a red pill becomes a real question. Why a sweet spot?
Official US rating: R. In France, zinema would say 14.
Set in the 22nd century, The Matrix tells the story of a computer hacker who joins a group of underground insurgents fighting the vast and powerful computers who now rule the earth.
A programmer discovers that the world he lives in is a simulation, that his real body floats in a tank, and that a handful of humans are fighting in the real world to get out.
The film explains its rules in one long scene halfway through, and everything after follows from them: knowing the rules lets you bend the simulation, but the real body still dies. The fights are choreographed like Hong Kong cinema, with wires and four months of actor training: this is not brawling, it is dance. The first film stands alone. The two sequels, and then the fourth film, open questions many viewers find less successful.
Warn about the bug scene and the waking in the vat, around the half-hour mark: that is where it can unsettle, not the gunfights.
