What it's about

Léon, the top hit man in New York, has earned a rep as an effective "cleaner". But when his next-door neighbors are wiped out by a loose-cannon DEA agent, he becomes the unwilling custodian of 12-year-old Mathilda. Before long, Mathilda's thoughts turn to revenge, and she considers following in Léon's footsteps.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated R in the US (restricted, under 17 requires an accompanying parent); 12 ans in France. zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
A family slaughtered before a child's eyesCorrupt policemen gun down Mathilda's whole family, her little brother included, while the twelve-year-old comes back from the shops and walks past the door without a word. Blood fills the centre of the frame for close to three minutes in all, in close-up.
Stansfield, a policeman who frightensThe villain is a drugged cop who screams, sniffs, searches a child and threatens to kill her; jolts are frequent and the violence erupts without warning.
A little girl who says she is in loveMathilda asks Léon to be her lover, dresses up as a woman for him, puts herself in danger to please him. The film shows nothing, but the question is asked, and a twelve-year-old takes it literally.
The killer's trade, taught like a gameLéon teaches Mathilda to shoot passers-by with a scoped rifle, paint rounds first; nearly two hundred shots of guns, some ninety swear words.

What the movie brings

Two lonelinesses saving each other, almost without words: a killer learning to read and a child learning to be loved.
A potted plant as the only attachment, and what it ends up meaning.
A film about tenderness in a world without any, which a teenager understands better than an adult.

Watching it together

After
