What age is Baron Noir appropriate for?

14 alone, 13 with a parent; 14 in France. All 24 episodes of the 3 seasons, watched one by one: what's in it, and how to talk about it with your child.

Why is Baron Noir not recommended under 14?

What's in it: our reading; a friend's suicide in the first episode, and what is made of it; adult language, constantly; power is also played out in bed; betray, humiliate, drop: the heart of the story; cigarettes, whisky, and a compulsive gambler. The detail, fact by fact, is in the zinema guide, which reads the work itself (images, sound, dialogue).

Alone from 14; from 13, with an adult or by talking about it afterwards. Our reading, episode by episode, refines that single number: seasons 1 and 3 read at 10, season 2 at the top, 14.

In France, zinema would say 14.

What it's about

In a tale of epic scale, French politician Philippe Rickwaert thirsts for revenge against his political enemies. Philippe’s political career is in shambles after he is sacrificed by the presidential candidate from the Left, Francis Laugier, in order to save his election. Step by step, Philippe plots against him and forges an alliance with his closest advisor, Amélie Dorendeu.

Why 14

Our readingNot rated in the US. We say 14: A political series for adults: a friend's suicide in the first episode, told and exploited, bed scenes in almost every episode, crude language throughout, and manipulation as the engine of every plot. At 14 alone, at 13 with an adult who explains the words of politics.
reading
A friend's suicide in the first episode, and what is made of itJoël, the treasurer, kills himself before the police arrive; we do not see it, we learn it, and Rickwaert turns it into a speech that same evening. The word comes back later in the series. A teenager understands that a man's death becomes an argument.
Adult language, constantlyTwenty-five swear words in the first episode alone, the French equivalents of fuck, shit and bitch included; insults in nineteen episodes out of twenty-four, and a gay slur thrown twice in one season 2 scene.
Power is also played out in bedLove scenes in almost every episode, bodies under the sheets, no more explicit than evening television but frequent: sex is a currency like everything else. The dialogue does not mention it, the image shows it.
Betray, humiliate, drop: the heart of the story'If I go down, you sink.' Friends abandoned, opponents humiliated in public, activists manipulated, a teenage daughter who runs away to her mother's because home has become unlivable. The cruelty is in the words, across twenty-two episodes.
Cigarettes, whisky, and a compulsive gamblerPeople smoke in almost every episode, drink in party offices and brasseries, and one character gambles to the point of shame. Never shown as a problem to solve, always there.
Little physical violence, a lot of nervesA few gunshots and one death threat in three seasons, a fight or two. The editing, though, is tense, episode endings never settle, and silences are cut by shouting.

What the series brings

Politics from the inside: primaries, motions, parliamentary groups, how a president gets made, explained by the people doing it.
An anti-hero you follow in spite of yourself: Rickwaert always has a good reason to do wrong, and the series never decides for you.
Working-class northern France: Dunkirk, the factories, the activists, the town that votes for him because he is from there.

Watching it together

Before

A series for older teenagers interested in politics: watch it with them and stop on the words, primary, motion, caucus, Assembly. The suicide in the first episode deserves a sentence before, not after.

After

at 14 and up

Philippe Rickwaert does bad things for good reasons, he says: does that count?
