10 alone, 9 with a parent.
Alone, or with you
Alone from 10; from 9, with an adult or by talking about it afterwards.
The sweet spot: around 10, when you are Harry's age on his first day, dream of a school where you would finally be someone, and like being a little scared. Why a sweet spot?
In France, zinema would say 8.
Harry Potter has lived under the stairs at his aunt and uncle's house his whole life. But on his 11th birthday, he learns he's a powerful wizard, with a place waiting for him at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As he learns to harness his newfound powers with the help of the school's kindly headmaster, Harry uncovers the truth about his parents' deaths, and about the villain who's to blame.
An orphan mistreated by his relatives learns at eleven that he is a wizard, enters a school of magic in Scotland, and finds out why everyone there knows his name.
The magical world is hidden inside our own, in 1990s Britain: same cities, same trains, but a parallel society with its own bank, press and ministry. The school is a classic British boarding school, with uniforms, rival houses and stern teachers; many codes the film does not translate come from that, not from magic. This first film is the gentlest of the series. The tone darkens from the fourth onwards, and each film aims a little older than the last, which is why our ages differ between them.
Warn that the forest at night and the face on the back of the skull frighten younger children; everything ends well, and the film is long.
