What it's about
The story of August Pullman – a boy with facial differences – who enters fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time.
Why 9
- Bullying that really stingsAuggie is stared at, whispered about and called names, and the cruelty comes from kids his own age. Words like freak, stupid and idiot land hard, and one long stretch of exclusion is meant to hurt the viewer too. Children who have felt left out at school may recognize themselves very quickly.
- Loss and grief, told out loudDeath is talked about several times rather than shown, including a family loss that arrives quietly and marks the whole household. There is real crying, and the film takes its time with it instead of moving on.
- Feeling alone, and afraid of being seenSeveral passages sit in darkness or in a child's imagination, with a boy alone, a helmet pulled down, faces frozen in fright. Nothing monstrous happens, but the fear of being looked at is filmed from the inside and can be quietly upsetting for a younger child.
- Fights and weapons, mostly imaginedThe knives, guns and gunfire belong to daydreams and to a space adventure the boy loves, not to real threat, and the one real scuffle between kids is brief and clumsy. Read out of context these moments look bigger than they play on screen.
- Grown-ups with a glass in handWine and beer appear at adult tables and gatherings, and cigarettes show up in the background. Drugs are named a few times in conversation between older teens, never used. It is scenery rather than subject.
What the movie brings
- A rare, clear lesson in choosing kindness when it costs something.
- The story steps into the shoes of the sister, the friend and the classmate, so children see that everyone carries something invisible.
- It gives words to what exclusion feels like, from both sides.
