What it's about

When Bonnie receives a Lilypad tablet as a gift and becomes obsessed, Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang's jobs become exponentially harder when they have to go head to head with the all-new threat to playtime.

Why 8

Long stretches in the darkA big share of the movie happens at night or in dim places, with more than twenty sustained dark scenes, and several images of a small figure alone in the shadows. For a young viewer this is the part that lingers most: not gore, but the feeling of being lost and left behind.
shown
Chases, scares and loud perilThe score pushes hard, there is screaming, growling from a marked villain, and a first-act rush of fire and explosions. Faces frozen in fright come back often around the 23, 56 and 59 minute marks, and one silence-then-bang moment near 53 minutes can make a five year old jump.
shown
Cartoon fights, toy weaponsScuffles, tumbles and pointed objects show up throughout, in the knockabout style of these films: no blood, no lasting harm, and the tone stays comic. A couple of lines refer to someone being dead or to a punch, but nothing is shown.
shown
Put-downs between friendsThe group teases and stings each other more than usual, with a few sharp words like stupid or losers around 12, 18 and 33 minutes, and four stretches where one character is clearly made fun of. Worth naming out loud with a young child, since the film does eventually repair it.
shown
A few grown-up background detailsToward the end there are celebration scenes where adults are drinking, and one or two throwaway grown-up references in the dialogue that will sail over young heads. Nothing is dwelt on.

What the movie brings

A warm question about growing up: what happens to what we loved when something newer arrives.
Loyalty inside a group of friends who bicker, tease, and still choose each other.
Fast, funny, beautifully made adventure with a genuinely happy landing.

Watching it together

Before

Before you start, tell a younger child that the toys always find each other again, so the dark stretches feel like a detour rather than a threat.

After

at 8 and up

Have you ever put something aside because you found something more exciting? How do you think the older thing felt?
