What it's about

Ashitaka, a prince of the disappearing Emishi people, is cursed by a demonized boar god and must journey to the west to find a cure. Along the way, he encounters San, a young human woman fighting to protect the forest, and Lady Eboshi, who is trying to destroy it. Ashitaka must find a way to bring balance to this conflict.

A god turned monster, up closeThe film opens on a creature of writhing black tendrils and rage, and other beings later take on shapes that are hard to look away from. Grunting and growling fill long stretches, and several faces contort in terror. The scariest passages are held rather than glimpsed, which is exactly what makes them stay with a child.

A real war, with real deadThis is not a cartoon skirmish. Gunfire, explosions, burning forests and battlefields run through the whole film, arrows and blades strike bodies, wounds bleed, and the camera does not turn away from the fallen. Death is also spoken of constantly, as a threat and as a fact.

Grief, illness and dark placesThe hero carries a curse he may not survive, and the story keeps returning to loss: weeping, characters alone in the dark, long night scenes. Cruelty toward the forest and its animals is discussed openly. A child of ten follows all of it, but the weight is real.

No easy villainThe film refuses to sort anyone into good or bad: the woman who destroys the forest also shelters the outcasts, and the wild gods can be merciless. That moral knot is the heart of the film and the reason it rewards a conversation afterward rather than a shrug.

The codes, for parents

A young prince cursed by a boar-demon sets out to find a cure and arrives in a forest where animal gods and an iron-smelting town are at war, with a girl raised by wolves in between.

The lexicon

Animal kamiThe gods of the forest take the form of huge talking animals: wolves, boars, apes. They are not fantasy creatures but local deities, in the Japanese Shinto sense.
The Forest Spirit (Shishigami)The spirit of the forest, a deer by day, a translucent giant by night. It gives life and takes it back in the same gesture, without intent: neither ally nor enemy.
A tatarigami (a god turned demon)A god eaten by hatred and pain becomes covered in black worms and poisons what it touches. The film opens on this, and the hero's curse comes from that contact.
San, Princess MononokeMononoke is not a first name: it is a Japanese word for a vengeful supernatural thing. The girl raised by wolves is called that by those who fear her.
KodamaThe little white spirits who rattle their heads in the trees. Their presence means the forest is healthy; their disappearance, the opposite.
Tataraba, the iron townLady Eboshi's industrial fortress, where ore is smelted with bellows. It destroys the forest, but it employs and shelters lepers and former prostitutes nobody else wants.
Lady EboshiThe town's leader. She wants to kill the Forest Spirit, and is still the most human character in the film: the story refuses to make her a villain.
The EmishiThe hero's people, in northern Japan, pushed back and almost erased by central power in the Middle Ages. Ashitaka is the last prince of an already defeated world.

How the world works

Nobody is entirely right. The forest kills, the town shelters outcasts, and the film refuses to choose: that is what sets it apart from other ecological films. Blood is green or black most of the time, but not always: heads and arms are severed on screen, briefly and without relish. This is its director's most violent film. The story is set in medieval Japan, in a real period when iron and deforestation changed the country.

The references

Hayao Miyazaki worked on this project for sixteen years, and made it at a moment when he thought he was giving up cinema.
Shinto, in which every natural element houses a deity, explains the film's entire world; it is not an invented mythology.
It is the film that made Studio Ghibli known outside Japan, and on release it broke the box-office record held by E.T.
Images of its forests and kodama now circulate far beyond the film, in the video games and cartoons your children watch.

Why they love it

A hero who refuses to pick a side and tries to make both talk is rare, and it lands in adolescence.
San is not a princess to be rescued: she bites, she spits, she lives with wolves, and she does not change her life at the end.
The film takes nature's anger seriously instead of making it cute.

Three questions to ask

Lady Eboshi destroys the forest and saves people nobody wanted: is she wrong or right?
Ashitaka says he wants to see with eyes unclouded by hate: is that possible when you are angry?
San does not forgive humans at the end: do you understand, or do you find it unfair?
