The sweet spot: around 13, this is the age when you actually play Werewolf with friends, when bluffing and accusing without proof becomes a pleasure around a table. The film then makes full sense, and the fear of the dark no longer bites hard enough to spoil the fun. Why a sweet spot?

What it's about

When an old card game comes to life, a family jumps back in time to a medieval village where they must unmask werewolves to secure their return home.

A child alone in the darkThe strongest thread is not blood, it is the fear of being cut off from your family. Long night scenes, a child isolated in the dark, hiding and waiting: more than a third of the film plays out in near darkness, and that feeling lingers at bedtime more than any wound does.
Wolves, growls and screamsThe creature is felt more than fully shown: growls off screen, faces frozen in terror, shrieks and whispers under the music. The comic tone keeps pulling the tension back down, which helps, but the scary beats are real and repeated.
Fights, blades and gunshotsPlenty of scuffles, knives and a few firearms, shots heard rather than dwelled on, some bleeding faces and bodies glimpsed. It stays in adventure register, closer to slapstick chase than to horror, and the worst violence is told in words rather than put on screen.
Deaths and blood, in wordsThe village talk is blunt: killing, blood, even torture are named again and again in the dialogue. Nothing graphic is shown, but the words alone build a heavy atmosphere for a younger viewer.
Coarse language throughoutRoughly sixteen curse words across the film, including crude anatomical slang, plus a handful of put downs between family members. It is the casual, everyday swearing of a French comedy, but it is frequent.
Drinking, smoking, a mention of drugsAlcohol is drunk and joked about, cigarettes appear a few times, and drugs are named in passing as a punchline. Nothing is glamorized or shown in use beyond that.

What the movie brings

It turns a game of suspicion into a lesson about trusting the people you love.
A family that bickers learns to listen to each other when the stakes are real.
It shows that courage is often just staying next to someone who is scared.
