What it's about

On a North Carolina island of haves and have-nots, John B and his tight-knit crew of friends find mystery and adventure while hunting for lost treasure.

Why 17

• The official rating, firstRated TV-MA in the US (mature audiences only). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
  rule
• Gunfire and a few deaths, including a sheriff shot point blankThe show kills rarely but cleanly: a sheriff shot dead by a teenager, a father who lets a man drown, a chapel set on fire with someone inside. Blood stays rare on screen, about thirty seconds across fifty episodes, but guns are everywhere: pistols in almost every episode, death threats, ten seconds of gunfire in the most violent one.
• Teenagers in danger from one episode to the nextDiving without air, a storm at sea, a jump from a bridge, a truck driven at them, held at gunpoint: danger is the engine of the show, present in forty-five episodes out of fifty, and sixteen-year-olds live it, often on the run far from any adult. A twelve-year-old sees heroes; someone needs to say these are also reckless choices.
• A father who beats his son, a brother who hits his sisterYou gave me nothing but a shitty life: JJ's father hits him and steals from him, Sarah's brother holds her under water, another father abandons his own. Cruelty comes from families more than from criminals, and it is said in hard words. Two griefs run through the series, a father lost at sea, then found, then lost for good.
• Beer, joints and swearing in the backgroundThe Pogues drink at every party, smoke, talk about drugs (a dealer is part of the scenery), and swear about forty times an episode. The love stories stay at kissing, with one night implied, never shown.
