What it's about

The true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner's son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father's wishes.

Why 10

Above the official rating, and whyRated PG in the US (parental guidance suggested). We say 10: A true story in which the mine kills twice, seen through sirens, families at the gate and coffins, never a body; what weighs alongside it is a two-hour father-son conflict and some forty swear words from the miners. Ten years old, nine with a parent.

The mine kills, and we see it from a distanceA cave-in kills one man and badly injures Homer's father; a miner later dies of coal dust in his lungs. We see the sirens, the families at the gate, the coffins, never a body or a drop of blood. A rocket goes astray and sets a meadow on fire, and the boys are accused of starting a forest fire.
A father and a son at odds for two hoursThe conflict is the heart of the film: the father refuses to attend a single launch, Homer has to go down the mine when the family runs short of money. Some forty swear words in the original version, fifteen in the French one, mostly from the miners. A fight between brothers, another at school, both brief. Everybody smokes.

What the movie brings

A true story of science done by hand: calculations, failures, welding, and a maths book that has to be fetched.
A teacher who changes a life by lending a book, shown without fuss.
The portrait of a town that knows it will die with its mine, and pushes its children out anyway.
