Hawk MothThe villain, who never fights himself: he manufactures monsters out of other people's negative feelings. His identity is a secret the series takes seasons to handle.

How the world works

The series is set in a recognisable Paris, Eiffel Tower, Seine, school, bakery, which makes it one of the rare action series French children place at home. Every episode follows the same shape: someone is hurt in ordinary life, is turned into a monster, the heroes beat them, and the world is repaired at the end. Nothing is ever broken for good. The real subject is not fighting but shyness: Marinette cannot speak to Adrien, and that is what brings children back episode after episode.

The references

The series is French, produced in Paris by Zagtoon and Method Animation, and shown in more than a hundred and twenty countries: the biggest French animation success of the last twenty years.
It borrows from Japanese magical-girl manga, Sailor Moon above all: the transformation, the formula, the animal companion, the secret double life.
An early flat-animation pilot, very different, still circulates online; the finished series is computer-animated and took six years to get made.
The Ladybug costume is among the most worn by small girls at carnival and at birthday parties in France, and the end-of-episode fist bump is traded in playgrounds. The series has also produced a feature film and songs children know by heart.

Why they love it

The monster of the week is always someone sad, never someone evil: children work out very early that the villain is a victim, and it interests them.
The double identity is made to be replayed at home, with a formula and a gesture; this is a series you watch standing up.
The romantic misunderstanding keeps children hooked across whole seasons, exactly like a soap.
