From 13, alone or with a parent.
Alone, or with you
The official US rating is PG-13, and we never go below it. Alone from 13, and not before, even with an adult.
The sweet spot: around 13, when you have learned what the camps were, and understand why a father lies to his son to protect him. Again around 15-17, when you watch it from Guido's side, and measure what it costs him to keep his son laughing to the very end. Why a sweet spot?
Official US rating: PG-13. In France, zinema would say 10.
A touching story of an Italian book seller of Jewish ancestry who lives in his own little fairy tale. His creative and happy life would come to an abrupt halt when his entire family is deported to a concentration camp during World War II. While locked up he tries to convince his son that the whole thing is just a game.
Explain beforehand what the camps were, or the second half makes no sense; and stay for the ending, the gunfire behind the wall calls for a hand to hold.
at 13 and up
Guido tells his son it is a game: is it a lie, and why does he do it?
