What it's about

Dr. Lily Houghton enlists the aid of wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff to take her down the Amazon in his dilapidated boat. Together, they search for an ancient tree that holds the power to heal – a discovery that will change the future of medicine.

Why 13

The official rating, firstRated PG-13 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Undead of the jungleThe villains are cursed conquistadors, faces where snakes, bees or mud grow, surging out at night in a jungle that is dark one image in two. It is the film's real source of fear: growls, screams, and twisted faces that can haunt an eight year old.
shown
A sword through the heart, for laughsThe hero takes a sword full in the chest and keeps talking, annoyed, asking a friend to pull it out: it is a gag, and it reveals a secret about him. That moment is what brings blood on screen; for a child it is more funny than frightening, once the surprise has passed.
shown
Gunfire, brawls, a villain who threatensA prince in a submarine threatens to kill hundreds of innocents and the heroine's brother, bursts of gunfire, swashbuckling fights, a fire. Old-fashioned adventure, shown without gory detail, with threats spoken more than carried out.
shown
A grief you understand at the endThe skipper carries a long story of loss and solitude, told with restraint in the last scenes, and there is a moment when a friend seems lost. Nothing long, but sensitive children feel it.
shown
Cigars, drinks and a kissThe skipper smokes and drinks in his floating bar, there is talk of beer and whisky, and the adventure ends with a kiss. The language is clean in both versions.

What the movie brings

A scientist heroine who wears trousers in 1916 and gets called "Pants" for it: the film laughs, and proves her right.
A brother who hates adventure and goes anyway, for his sister: the courage of people who do not look brave.
The pleasure of the adventure film of old: a boat, a map, a jungle, traps, and jokes at a penny apiece.

Watching it together

Before

The cursed conquistadors, at their first appearance around the twenty-fifth minute and then in the final night, are when a nine year old moves closer; the sword in the chest, around the hour and a quarter, is defused in one sentence: he is fine.

After

at 13 and up

Frank makes jokes even when he is scared. Do you think it helps him, or holds him back?
