Determined to prove herself, Officer Judy Hopps, the first bunny on Zootopia's police force, jumps at the chance to crack her first case - even if it means partnering with scam-artist fox Nick Wilde to solve the mystery.

Threats that sound realThe dialogue carries hard words: characters are told they are dead, that someone will hurt them, and there is talk of blood and bloodlust. Nothing gory is shown, but the words land, and a crime-story dread runs under the bright colors. Note that the drill instructor barking « dead! » during police training is a joke about boot camp, not a real death, though small viewers may not hear the joke.

Predators turning savageSeveral times an animal goes wild, growling and lunging, and the film leans into the fright: screaming faces, dark corridors, a nighttime chase, an underground lab. Around the one hour mark and again in the last twenty minutes the tension climbs. It is short each time, but it is the part younger children remember at bedtime.

Being put down for what you areA young character is bullied and hurt early on, and mid-film a public speech turns a whole group into suspects. The sting of being mocked, doubted, and labeled is the beating heart of the story, and it is played seriously enough that a child may feel it. Everyday insults fly too: idiot, loser, moron.

Guns, mostly of the cartoon kindWeapons appear on screen and shots are heard once, but this is animation: much of what looks like a firearm is a tranquilizer dart gun or a prop in a scheme, and the violence stays bloodless.
