The official US rating is PG; we never go below it, and here we go above: 6. Alone from 6; from 5, with an adult or by talking about it afterwards.

The sweet spot: around 6-9, the age at which you re-enact the fights in the living room and the blank scroll lands; at nine, you spot the nods to kung-fu cinema. Why a sweet spot?

Official US rating: PG; zinema says 6. In France, zinema would say 6.

What it's about

Chosen by prophecy but doubted by all, Po is an unlikely choice for the mystical title of the Dragon Warrior, a clumsy panda thrust into the world of kung fu as a deadly enemy threatens the Valley of Peace. Under reluctant guidance by Master Shifu and the Furious Five, Po must embrace who he is to unlock the power that no scroll can teach.

Why 6

Above the official rating, and whyRated PG in the US (parental guidance suggested). We say 6: Eighty minutes of cartoon kung-fu in which blows land but nothing bleeds and the one death is a villain vanishing in a golden flash; the escape sequence is dark and loud, everything else is comedy. Six years old, five with a parent for that escape.

Fights from beginning to endTai Lung's escape, the battle on the rope bridge, the final showdown in the village: blows land, characters are thrown into walls, a bridge collapses. Nothing bleeds, nobody stays hurt, and Tai Lung vanishes in a golden flash with no body. A third of the film is comedy, and Po's grimaces defuse every threat.
A villain who really is frighteningTai Lung is built up long before he appears, through the story of his betrayal and a whole prison made for him; when he escapes, the sequence is dark and loud. A few loud starts, night scenes, and the sadness of Shifu, who raised that villain.

What the movie brings

A hero who wins without changing his body or his character: his greed becomes his strength.
The Dragon Scroll is blank: there is no secret ingredient, an idea a six-year-old takes away.
Animation that quotes Hong Kong kung-fu cinema, with real choreography.

Watching it together

Before

At five, stay for Tai Lung's escape, the only genuinely dark sequence.

After

at 6 and up

Shifu raised both Tai Lung and Po: why does one turn out badly and the other not?
