What it's about
After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island's animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose.
Why 7
- Our readingThe deaths are told, never shown, and the film is gentle from start to finish: at seven a child can watch it alone, at six with an adult for the gosling's departure.reading
- Death, told rather than shownThe robot accidentally crushes a family of geese as soon as she lands, and the film says so plainly: the gosling left behind is an orphan, and the island's animals keep reminding each other that winter, hunters and predators kill. No body suffers on screen; the word is there, and it weighs.
- Fire, storm and machinesA forest fire, a winter that freezes the animals, then armed robots sent to retrieve Roz, with shooting and explosions: the last half hour is a loud, sometimes dark battle in which the robot mother is badly damaged.
- A bear, a fox, animal fearsPredators growl and charge, the fox steals before he befriends, and several scenes show a little one alone in the dark. Nothing gory, but frights pitched at a six-year-old.
- The departure, and the tears that come with itThe heart of the film is a separation: the gosling must leave with his kind, and the mother who raised him must let him go. That is where children cry, and where you should be sitting next to them.
What the movie brings
- A mother who learns the job by doing it, without a manual, and gets it wrong before getting it right.
- The idea that you can be born different, a robot among animals, and still become someone for others.
- Nature without sweetness: creatures die and go hungry there, and helping each other is a choice, not a given.
Watching it together
Warn beforehand that the opening is hard on the goose family, and stay close for the migration: that is when your child will need a hand.
