What it's about

In the years before World War II, a tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey is hired as a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children and brings a new love of life and music into the home.

Why 9

The Nazi threat, in the last thirdAfter the wedding, the swastika flag on the house, a father ordered to serve the new regime, a family fleeing at night and hiding in an abbey while soldiers search. A young man the children know points a gun at the father. Nobody is hurt, but the fear is real for the youngest.
shown
A thunderstorm, frightened childrenA night storm sends all seven children running into the governess's bed, and she turns it into a song. The film knows what to do with fear: it is even its subject.
shown
A dead mother, a closed-off fatherThe mother's death is spoken of, never shown. The father whistles for his children like a crew and has banished music from the house. The governess leaves without saying goodbye and the children are heartbroken. All of it gets mended, in song.
shown
Cigars, champagne and a first kissThe adults smoke and drink at the party, 1965 style. A sixteen-year-old exchanges a first kiss in a gazebo, and the film makes a song of it.
