From 13, alone or with a parent.
Alone, or with you
The official US rating is PG-13, and we never go below it. Alone from 13, and not before, even with an adult.
The sweet spot: around 13, when you have read or can read the book, can sit through three hours, and the Black Riders frighten without keeping you awake. Why a sweet spot?
Official US rating: PG-13. In France, zinema would say 11.
Young hobbit Frodo Baggins, after inheriting a mysterious ring from his uncle Bilbo, must leave his home in order to keep it from falling into the hands of its evil creator. Along the way, a fellowship is formed to protect the ringbearer and make sure that the ring arrives at its final destination: Mt. Doom, the only place where it can be destroyed.
A small peaceable creature inherits a ring that turns its wearer invisible and turns out to be a dark lord's weapon; eight companions set out with him to destroy it where it was forged.
This is not a magical world but an old one: very few spells, swords, horses, walking. Magic is rare and costs its user dearly. The three films are one story cut in three. The first ends mid-sentence, deliberately, and the extended version adds an hour that many families prefer. Evil comes not from a monster but from a seductive object: each character is tempted in turn, and temptation, not battle, is what moves the story.
Warn about the Black Riders under the bed and Boromir's death; a ten-year-old needs you beside them for Moria, at eleven they go alone.

Gandalf says even Gollum still has a part to play: why spare someone who has done evil?
