What age is The Diplomat appropriate for?

Rated TV-MA in the US. 17, alone or with a parent; 13 in France. All 30 episodes of the 4 seasons, watched one by one: what's in it, and how to talk about it with your child.

Why is The Diplomat not recommended under 17?

What's in it: shots fired, and blood on screen; many deaths, none of them shown; grief that lingers, and anxiety; constant coarse language; a stormy marriage, crude innuendo. The detail, fact by fact, is in the zinema guide, which reads the work itself (images, sound, dialogue).

What it's about

Amid an international crisis, a US diplomat contends with her high-profile job as ambassador to the UK and her strained marriage to a political star.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated TV-MA in the US (mature audiences only). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Shots fired, and blood on screenIn the fourth season, shots ring out during an official outing: you hear them without seeing the shooter, guards raise their rifles, and agents throw officials to the ground. A bloodstain spreads across the president's blouse, and she is later seen on a stretcher with the blouse soaked through, though no wound is shown and the surgery stays off screen. Earlier in the series, a woman is attacked by a man whom others have to restrain.
Many deaths, none of them shownThe series opens with a warship struck at sea and dozens of sailors killed. Later a bombing brings grief to the embassy, and the fourth season reports a suicide and an accidental death without showing either. People are threatened with execution, assassinations are ordered, war comes close. All of it is delivered in offices, over the phone or in briefings: you learn about the deaths, you never see them.
Grief that lingers, and anxietyA grief runs through a whole season: panic attacks, guilt, a face that keeps coming back, and characters who say in plain words that they will never get over it. The fourth season adds a new loss, and a heroine eaten up by stress and guilt: she barely sleeps, throws up, and admits to pulling out her hair, something you never see her do. It is the heaviest material in the show, and it is handled seriously.
Constant coarse languageThis is the most visible point for a parent. In the original English the swearing never lets up, roughly one every two minutes, from about ten to more than fifty per episode, with the f-word leading the way. Insults between adults are frequent.
A stormy marriage, crude innuendoThe heart of the series is a marriage between two adults who love and wreck each other, with mutual humiliation and manipulation. The sexual talk is crude, and more explicit still in the fourth season, where the lovemaking happens off screen, with no nudity. People drink at every social occasion, and nothing is spelled out for a young viewer.

What the series brings

A woman leads under constant pressure without being softened, and the series makes her neither a saint nor a monster.
It shows concretely what an ambassador does, why every word is weighed, and how a war is started or avoided on a single sentence.
It offers a marriage between equals, neither idealized nor condemned, where admiration and resentment hold together.

Watching it together

Before

There is little to hide and a lot to explain; before the fourth season, you can warn that the president is seen bloodied on a stretcher. A teenager who follows the news will learn what a diplomatic crisis really is; a younger viewer will be bored long before being shocked.

After

at 17 and up

Nobody in this series ever quite says what they think: is that lying, or is that the job?
