Amid an international crisis, a US diplomat contends with her high-profile job as ambassador to the UK and her strained marriage to a political star.

- Many deaths, none of them shownThe series opens with a warship struck at sea and dozens of sailors killed. Later a bomb kills a young embassy colleague, and a president dies. All of it is delivered in offices, over the phone or in briefings: you learn about the deaths, you never see them. This is a show that talks about violence without ever filming it.
- A grief that lasts a whole seasonThe young colleague's death is not a plot device, it is a grief the series carries for episodes: panic attacks, guilt, a face that keeps coming back. Several characters say in plain words that they will not get over it. It is the heaviest material in the show, and it is handled seriously.
- Constant coarse languageThis is the most visible point for a parent. Swearing lands at a steady rate, about fifty in the first episode in the original version and fifteen per episode in the French dub, including the crudest words. Insults between adults are frequent, and nothing is softened by the dubbing.
- A marriage tearing itself apart, and drink everywhereThe heart of the series is a marriage between two adults who love and destroy each other, with mutual humiliation and manipulation. People drink at every social scene. Nothing is judged on screen, and nothing is explained to a young viewer.
- One assault, and death threatsA woman is attacked by a man who has to be restrained by others, the only physical violence carried on screen. Elsewhere the danger is political: people are threatened with execution, assassinations are ordered, but it all plays out in dialogue.
What the series brings
- A woman leads under constant pressure without being softened, and the series makes her neither a saint nor a monster.
- It shows concretely what an ambassador does, why every word is weighed, and how a war is started or avoided on a single sentence.
- It offers a marriage between equals, neither idealised nor condemned, where admiration and resentment hold together.
Watching it together
There is nothing to cover your eyes for, but plenty to explain. A teenager who follows the news will find here what a diplomatic crisis actually is; a younger child will be bored long before being shocked.
