What it's about

Jaime Escalante is a mathematics teacher in a school in a hispanic neighbourhood. Convinced that his students have potential, he adopts unconventional teaching methods to try and turn gang members and no-hopers into some of the country's top algebra and calculus students.

Why 9

Our readingA high school with gangs, schoolyard innuendo and insults, in a true story about a teacher: nine, eight with an adult.
reading
Gangs in the classroomA poor-neighbourhood high school in Los Angeles, students in crews, a knife pulled in class, a fight, threats against the teacher; the film shows the fear of the neighbourhood without ever turning to violence.
Students' wordsSome twenty swear words, schoolyard sexual innuendo, cigarettes and beer among the parents.
The restA teacher who has a heart attack in front of his students, a few tears.

What the movie brings

A teacher who believes in students everyone gave up on, and takes them to the hardest exam: the true story of Jaime Escalante.
Mathematics as pride, not punishment.
An accusation of cheating because they did too well, and the answer: do it again.

Watching it together
