What age is Ponyo (Ponyo sur la falaise) appropriate for?

6 alone, 5 with a parent; 6 in France. The whole movie, watched in full: what's in it, and how to talk about it with your child.

Why is Ponyo (Ponyo sur la falaise) not recommended under 6?

What's in it: our reading; a storm that swallows the town; a small boy who copes alone; death spoken, never shown; fear on faces, and tears; what looks like conflict is not. The detail, fact by fact, is in the zinema guide, which reads the work itself (images, sound, dialogue).

The official US rating is G; we never go below it, and here we go above: 6. Alone from 6; from 5, with an adult or by talking about it afterwards.

The sweet spot: around 6-7, when a child's promise counts as much as a grown-up's. Why a sweet spot?

Official US rating: G; zinema says 6. In France, zinema would say 6.

What it's about

When Sosuke, a young boy who lives on a clifftop overlooking the sea, rescues a stranded goldfish named Ponyo, he discovers more than he bargained for. Ponyo is a curious, energetic young creature who yearns to be human, but even as she causes chaos around the house, her father, a powerful sorcerer, schemes to return Ponyo to the sea.

Why 6

Our readingA little fish who wants to become a little girl, a storm and a rising sea, all ending in joy: six alone, five with an adult.
reading
A storm that swallows the townThe heart of the film is a huge wave and a flood that cover the village and the road. It is beautiful more than brutal, but the roar, the rising water and the sense of a world turned upside down can impress a small child. There are also glowing shapes and strange sea creatures in the surge that a little one may read as monsters.
shown
A small boy who copes aloneSosuke is five and spends stretches of the story without his parents: his father is at sea, his mother drives off through the storm, and he waits, watches and calls out. Several images show a child by himself in the dark or in the water. Young viewers who are sensitive to separation may need a hand to hold in those minutes.
shown
Death spoken, never shownWords like dying, blood or being lost come up a few times in conversation, mostly about the sea and about the elderly women at the care home. Nothing is shown. It is the kind of line a child may ask about afterward.
said
Fear on faces, and tearsThere is shouting, crying and a few frightened or oddly shaped faces, above all Ponyo's father, whose appearance and manner unsettle some small children before they understand he is not a villain. Sound carries much of the emotion here.
shown
What looks like conflict is notScenes read from a distance as chases or scuffles are in fact water magic, waves and a father trying to bring his daughter home. Kitchen knives are cooking, sparks are lamps and engines, and the affectionate gestures are hugs and kisses between parents and children. A glass of something at a celebration and a pipe in the background pass in a second.

What the movie brings

A story about welcoming someone different, told with enormous tenderness.
A five year old hero who is brave, polite and reliable, which small children love to recognize.
Images of sea, weather and old age that invite wonder rather than fear.

Watching it together

Before

Before the big wave, you can say that the sea is going to get very large and noisy, and that nobody in this story stays lost.

After

at 6 and up

Ponyo really wants to become a little girl. If you could turn into an animal for one day, which one would you pick, and what would you miss about being you?
