not yetwith an adult, or to talk about afteralonethe sweet spot
The official US rating is TV-MA, and we never go below it. Alone from 17, and not before, even with an adult.
The sweet spot: around 17-18, when you can watch a family held together by fear without finding it admirable. Why a sweet spot?
The trailer
What it's about
A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England and centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby, who means to move up in the world.
Why 17
- The official rating, firstRated TV-MA in the US (mature audiences only). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.rule
- Razor blades, eyes torn out, fingernails pulledViolence is the language of the show and it is precise: the bladed caps that blind, a nail hammered into an enemy's nose, a man threatened with losing his eyelids and then his tongue, take his eyes, Finn. Blood fills the center of the frame for more than a minute and a half in total, with point-blank executions in almost every season and deaths of characters you love.
- A rape, sexual threats, and sex as currencyIn the second season, a policeman forces a woman of the family to submit to free her son: the scene is explicit in words and violence, not in nudity. Elsewhere, brothels, bets on a barmaid, everyone is a whore, we just sell different parts of ourselves. The love scenes are brief but adult.
- Whisky, opium and cigarettes in every scene, and the words of the timeThey drink in nearly every episode, smoke everywhere, Thomas smokes opium to sleep and cocaine circulates from the third season. The language follows: about thirty swear words an episode, and period racial slurs (Gypsies, Irish, Black people, Jews) in the characters' mouths.
- Men broken by the warThe Shelby brothers come back from the tunnels of the Somme with nightmares, breakdowns, the wish to die: I died over there anyway. Grief runs through almost every episode, and several characters choose their own end. For a teenager it is the heaviest part, more than the blood.
