not yetwith an adult, or to talk about afteralonethe sweet spot

The official US rating is TV-MA, and we never go below it. Alone from 17; from 16, with an adult or by talking about it afterwards.

The sweet spot: around 17-19, when you can follow characters who choose the worst while believing they protect their own, without needing to be told who is right. Why a sweet spot?

The trailer

What it's about

Two mob families clash in a war that threatens to topple empires and lives.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated TV-MA in the US (mature audiences only). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Blood held on screenWounds and bleeding are not hinted at: they are filmed up close and held, up to nearly a minute at a time in some scenes. Deaths are many, mostly talked about, sometimes shown.
Beatings, threats, gunfireGuns are drawn and fired, knives come out, and characters are cornered, beaten and held prisoner. The talk around it is as heavy as the images, with threats that reach into the families.
Language at full volumeThe dialogue is relentlessly profane, several dozen strong words an episode, with insults thrown inside the family as much as outside it. The French dub is milder, but still crude.
Adults drinking, smoking, dealingAlcohol comes up all the time, cigarettes are lit throughout, and drugs are discussed as business. Nothing is framed as a warning, it is simply the air these people breathe.
A dark, tense atmosphereMost of the series plays in near darkness, with long night scenes, sudden loud hits after silence, and episode endings left hanging on unease. It gets under the skin more than it startles.
Sex is suggested, not shownThere are kisses, bedroom scenes and blunt sexual talk, but the intimacy stays implied rather than displayed. It is the crudeness of the words that registers, more than any image.

What the series brings

It shows loyalty as something that costs, not something that is owed.
It lets a teenager watch power corrode a family from the inside, without making any of it look enviable.

Watching it together

Before

Before you start, say plainly that nobody in this story is meant to be admired, and that the charm of these men is part of how they get away with things.

After

at 17 and up

Harry calls himself loyal. Loyal to whom, exactly, and what does he give up each time he chooses?
