What it's about

A mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it.

Why 13

The official rating, firstRated PG-13 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.

Dark for more than half the filmMore than half of the movie plays out in near darkness: night skies, blackouts, the shadowed side of the Moon, dozens of long stretches with almost no light. A human review of the film confirms it: the fear here is constant and loud rather than gory.
Panic, screaming and destructionCrowds scream and run through collapsing streets, fires and explosions fill the screen in the last hour, and children are shown alone in the dark. Nothing bloody is displayed, but the sense of a world coming apart is sustained and can weigh on a younger viewer.
Guns and fights, about a minute of gunfireGuns are pointed and fired throughout, roughly a minute of gunshots in all, with scuffles and looting scenes as society breaks down. Injuries and deaths are mostly talked about rather than shown.
Swearing, and threats in the dialogueAround forty-five coarse words across the film, plus insults traded between characters and a few blunt lines about dying or being killed. It is adult talk under pressure, not cruelty, but it is frequent.
Drugs and drinking mentionedDrug use comes up several times in conversation, characters are seen smoking or having a drink. It stays in the background of the story.

What the movie brings

It sparks real questions about the Moon, gravity and tides, worth looking up together afterward.
It shows an outsider being believed at last, and a family choosing to stay together when everything shakes.
The ending is hopeful, which helps after two hours of disaster.

Watching it together

Before

Tell them upfront that this one is a big, loud disaster ride and that the science is largely made up, so they can enjoy the spectacle without worrying it is a forecast.
