What it's about
Two sisters move to the country with their father in order to be closer to their hospitalized mother, and discover the surrounding trees are inhabited by Totoros, magical spirits of the forest. When the youngest runs away from home, the older sister seeks help from the spirits to find her.

- A mother in the hospitalThe whole story rests on a mother who is ill and away from home, and the girls' worry is spoken out loud. Illness and the fear of losing someone are named in the dialogue, never shown, but a child who has a sick relative may feel this one closely. There are real tears, early on and again later.said
- A little girl goes missingIn the last third, the younger sister sets off alone and the village searches for her. The words are frightening for a moment and the older sister is genuinely scared. It resolves warmly, but the stretch of not knowing is the tensest part of the film for a young viewer.shown
