What it's about

Teenage Moana answers the Ocean's call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.

Why 7

Our readingThe live-action film: the ocean, a demigod and a lava monster more impressive than in the cartoon: seven alone, six with an adult.
reading
Long stretches of darkness at seaA large part of the film unfolds at night, in storms and in shadow, with many long dark passages and images of a child alone in the dark, cut off from home. That mix of night, water and separation is what younger viewers feel most.
shown
Monsters and faces of fearCreatures loom out of the dark more than once, and there are many shots of characters screaming in terror, plus a scary face. It passes quickly, but it lands hard before eight or nine.
shown
Death is talked about, not shownLoss runs through the story: characters speak of people killed, dying or gone, and one moment turns on real cruelty. Nothing graphic is shown, but the weight is there and children may want to talk about it.
said
Fights, fire and destructionScuffles, blades and clubs brandished, an island struck by fire and collapse: the action is physical and loud. In this Polynesian world the weapons are spears and blades rather than firearms, and the fighting stays adventure-style, without blood dwelling on screen.
shown
Sharp words between charactersSome exchanges sting: mockery and put-downs aimed at the heroine and at others, plus a couple of mild insults. Nothing coarse, but a sensitive child may notice the tone.

What the movie brings

A girl who trusts her own judgment against her father's caution, and follows it all the way.
A vivid, respectful window onto Polynesian navigation, chants and island life.
The idea that repairing a wrong matters more than punishing whoever caused it.

Watching it together

Before

Before the night scenes, you might say that the dark and the storm are part of the journey and that she is never truly abandoned.

After

at 7 and up

Vaiana keeps going when she is scared and alone. What helped her the most: the ocean, her grandmother, or something inside her?
