What it's about
This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.
Why 10
- Monsters loose, and lots of darkOnce the monsters get out, the movie spends a good stretch in near darkness, with growls, screaming faces and creatures filling the frame. It is played for laughs more than for dread, but a younger child who is uneasy in the dark will feel these stretches, especially late in the film.
- Cartoon chaos, guns and fireThere are chases, brawls, gunshots on the soundtrack, explosions and burning sets throughout. It is slapstick, the kind where nobody really gets hurt and the gags come fast, but the sheer volume of crashes, fights and fire is a lot of noise for a small viewer.
- Someone left alone, and tearsEarly on there is real crying, and later a character is stranded in the dark, cut off from the others. Those are the beats a sensitive child is most likely to carry home, more than any of the explosions.
- Mockery and a few insultsCharacters mock and put each other down at a couple of points, and the dialogue tosses out words like idiot, moron and weirdo. Nothing crude in the dubbed version, but the teasing is pointed enough to be worth a word afterward.
- Grown up background: drinks and drugs namedHollywood party scenes show adults with drinks, and drugs are mentioned in passing in the dialogue, as a joke aimed over kids' heads. Nothing is shown being used, and it goes by fast.
What the movie brings
- A playful send up of movie stardom: what it costs to be famous, and how fast it can vanish.
- The Minions fail loudly and often, then fix things together, which is a friendly lesson in owning a mess you made.
- Great visual comedy that works without dialogue, easy for the whole room to share.
Watching it together
Before you start, tell them the monsters are loud and the screen goes dark for a while, and that everyone yells a lot because it is a comedy, not because anyone is really in danger.
at 10 and up
The Minions caused the whole disaster, then tried to fix it. Is it enough to say sorry, or do you have to repair what you broke?
