What it's about
Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world.
Why 8
- Cartoon peril, played for laughsThe three Minions get shot at, chased, dropped into traps and menaced by a super villain who talks openly about killing them and torturing them. It is loud and constant, but it is drawn in bright cartoon style, nobody is really hurt, and the threats land as jokes far more often than as scares. A child of six reads it as a chase; a child of four or five may only hear the yelling.
- Loud, fast, rarely quietThe film almost never pauses: gunfire sounds, explosions, screaming, growls and shouting run through the whole runtime, with cuts every couple of seconds. Sensitive or very young viewers can find the sheer noise level tiring long before they find anything frightening.
- A few dark stretchesThere are several longer night scenes and moments where a small Minion is alone in the dark, plus crying heard early on when the little tribe falls into gloom. Short, and always resolved with a gag, but worth a hand to hold at five.
- Mild name callingThe dialogue tosses around a handful of insults, idiot, moron, freaks, and one grown up joke slides by in a word most kids will not catch. Nothing crude, nothing repeated.
What the movie brings
- A very physical, almost wordless kind of comedy: children follow the whole story through gestures, faces and gibberish, which is a real pleasure for early readers.
- A playful tour of history and of 1960s London, with a villain who is theatrical rather than genuinely cruel.
- A gentle idea underneath: the three friends stick together, and loyalty to each other matters more than serving the biggest boss.
