What it's about
After a police chase with an otherworldly being, a New York City cop is recruited as an agent in a top-secret organization established to monitor and police alien activity on Earth: the Men in Black. Agent K and new recruit Agent J find themselves in the middle of a deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies.

- The bug in a human suitThe villain is a giant insect wearing a farmer's skin like an ill fitting suit, and the film keeps showing it: the wrong smile, the twitching, the growls, and a full sized creature in the last stretch. It is played partly for laughs, but the design is deliberately repulsive and the roars land hard on younger ears.shown
- Guns, blasts and bodiesAgents fire flashy weapons constantly, aliens are vaporized, and there are bodies, small explosions and a few scuffles. The violence is cartoonish and bloodless, closer to a shooting gallery than to real harm, but weapons are on screen almost throughout and characters talk openly about killing.shown
- Jolts in the darkA lot of the film happens at night or in dim corridors, and several quiet stretches are broken by a sudden bang or a scream. Nothing lingers, but a sensitive eight or nine year old will jump more than once.shown
- Salty grown up talkThe dialogue leans on crude words and put downs throughout, and the dubbed version is coarser still, with several strong words. It is the tough cop register, tossed off rather than aimed to wound, but it is repeated often enough to be picked up.shown

What the movie brings
- A witty, fast buddy comedy where brains, calm and a good line beat brute force.
- It plays with the idea that the world is stranger than it looks, and that difference is worth protecting rather than fearing.
- Two very different partners learn to trust each other, and the humor never mocks the newcomer for asking questions.
Watching it together
Before the last twenty minutes you might say that the creature is a costume and a puppet, and that the film is having fun scaring us.
