What it's about
Alex, Marty, and other zoo animals find a way to escape from Madagascar when the penguins reassemble a wrecked airplane. The precariously repaired craft stays airborne just long enough to make it to the African continent. There the New Yorkers encounter members of their own species for the first time. Africa proves to be a wild place, but Alex and company wonder if it is better than their Central Park home.

- Torn from his parentsThe story opens with a lion cub separated from his mother and father and carried far away. It is brief and told with warmth, but the feeling of being lost and alone comes back several times, including some images of a small figure alone in the dark. This is the part that reaches younger children the most.
- Death is talked about, not shownCharacters say plenty about dying, killing and being eaten, mostly as jokes or bluster between friends. Nothing is shown, and there is no blood on screen, but the words land clearly for a child who takes them literally.
- Loud chases, gunshots, cartoon scrapesGunfire is heard, guns appear in a few shots, and there are tumbles, a plane going down, fire and explosions. It is all played for speed and laughs in the broad cartoon style of the series, with squashed and bounced bodies rather than injuries. The noise level is the real issue: many scenes are loud and fast, with plenty of screaming.
- Growls, dark scenes, one scary humanGrowling animals and a stubborn human pursuer create a few tense stretches, and roughly a quarter of the film plays in low light or at night. Nothing lingers, and the tone returns quickly to comedy.
- Put-downs between friendsThe friends insult and mock each other steadily: stupid, loser, freak, weirdo. It is affectionate teasing in context, but it is the kind of talk a young child repeats at school.
