What it's about
Animal pals Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria are still trying to make it back to New York's Central Park Zoo. They are forced to take a detour to Europe to find the penguins and chimps who broke the bank at a Monte Carlo casino. When French animal-control officer Capitaine Chantel DuBois picks up their scent, Alex and company are forced to hide out in a traveling circus.
Why 9
- A relentless cartoon chaseA determined animal control officer hunts the heroes across Europe, and the chases come with sirens, dart guns, crashes, fires and explosions. It is drawn big and bouncy rather than bloody, but the pursuit almost never lets up, and the tension in the music and the shouting can wear out a very young viewer.
- A villain who enjoys itThe chaser is played for laughs, but she is genuinely mean: she talks about what she wants to do to the animals, and there is talk of killing, of being shot or strangled. Nothing is shown, it stays in the words and in her grinning face, yet children around five will register that someone truly wants to hurt the characters they love.
- Dark stretches and near missesA good part of the film happens at night, in tunnels, train cars and back alleys, and several times a character ends up alone, trapped or separated from the group. Those moments are short and always resolved, but they are the ones a sensitive child may bring back up at bedtime.
- Teasing, and a few sharp wordsThe friends mock each other, and the circus animals put each other down before they learn to work together. Expect a handful of light insults, imbecile, stupid, useless, and one crude word in passing. Nothing coarse, but the put-downs are part of the humor.
What the movie brings
- A warm story about a patched-together group that turns failure into a show of its own.
- It says out loud that being different is exactly what makes the act worth watching.
- A cheerful tour of Europe, with a big burst of color and music at the end.
