- Illness, and a death in the familyDeath is spoken of throughout, never shown: a war that takes lives, and above all a long illness inside the house that the family lives through hour by hour. There is a bedside vigil, weeping, and a grief that lingers well past the scene itself. For a child under 9 this is the part that lands hardest.shown
- War talked about, not shownThe Civil War stays offscreen but presses on the family: wounds, blood and men being hurt are described in words, a father away at the front, distant gunfire, and talk of cruelty and of someone put in danger.
