What it's about

Five years after uniting the dragons and Vikings of Berk, Hiccup and Toothless soar beyond their homeland, charting the vast unknown. During one of their adventures, the pair discover a secret cave that houses hundreds of wild dragons, and a mysterious dragon rider with a startling connection to Hiccup. And as the ruthless conqueror Drago Bludvist rises to seize control of both dragons and people alike, Hiccup must step into his role as a true leader and, alongside his friends and Toothless, protect Berk from a devastating war.

Why 7

Our readingA mother found again, a father who dies before his son's eyes and a dragon driven mad: seven alone, six with an adult.
reading
A parent dies mid-filmA parent dies in front of their child, killed by the very creature they loved most, and the film takes its time with the grief: a funeral, a son who blames himself, anger at the one who struck. It is the heart of the film and what makes it great, but it is heavy before 8.
shown
A villain who crushes and burnsThe villain rules dragons through fear, tells how he burned an entire council alive and orders a woman on the ground to be finished off. Dragons caught in traps, blinded, left to die are described too. Nothing is shown up close, but everything is said.
said
Long, loud battlesBurning fleets, giant dragons fighting, ice explosions, and a hero who nearly drowns or gets crushed more than once. Spectacular and fast, with no blood, but the tension runs high through the last third.
shown
A mother found againThe hero finds a mother he thought was dead, and the film asks why she left. The reunion is tender, but the abandonment is named, and some children linger on it.

What the movie brings

Growing up when you are nothing like your father, and finding your own way to protect your people.
An animal's loyalty, and what you forgive it.

Watching it together

Before

Stay for the scene in the middle of the film: say the dragon was not himself, and that the grief that follows is normal.

After

at 7 and up

The dragon did something terrible without meaning to. Was it his fault? How do you forgive someone you love?
