The official US rating is PG-13, and we never go below it. Alone from 13, and not before, even with an adult.

The sweet spot: around 13, when you like jokes and space, and can watch a mother die at the opening without the rest of the film being spoiled. Why a sweet spot?

Official US rating: PG-13. In France, zinema would say 11.

What it's about

Light years from Earth, 26 years after being abducted, Peter Quill finds himself the prime target of a manhunt after discovering an orb wanted by Ronan the Accuser.

Why 13

The official rating, firstRated PG-13 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
A mother who dies, a child takenThe film opens on the death of Peter's mother, of cancer, before his eight-year-old eyes; he runs out and a ship takes him. Thirty seconds children remember more than the battle.
A bloodless space battleShips shot down by the hundred, Yondu killing dozens of soldiers with a whistling arrow, Groot sacrificing himself, Ronan crushing heads with his hammer (off screen); almost no blood on screen.
Swearing and rude gesturesTwenty-three swear words in English, as many in French, a middle finger, innuendo; a space prison, a dance-off. Nothing sexual.

What the movie brings

Five broken characters who become a family without saying so: that is the subject, beneath the jokes.
Peter's mother's mixtape, a 1980 soundtrack that makes the film.
Groot saying 'we are Groot': the simplest sacrifice in all of Marvel.

Watching it together

Before

The mother's death at the opening is the moment to warn about; the rest is a space comedy a ten-year-old will follow with you.

After

at 13 and up

Peter keeps his mother's tape for twenty-six years without opening it: what do you keep without daring to look?
