The official US rating is TV-MA, and we never go below it. Alone from 17, and not before, even with an adult. Our reading covers season 1; the series has 8.

What it's about

Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Friction between the houses leads to full-scale war. All while a very ancient evil awakens in the farthest north. Amidst the war, a neglected military order of misfits, the Night's Watch, is all that stands between the realms of men and icy horrors beyond.

Why 17

The codes, for parents

An epic, adult fantasy series about noble families competing for a throne while a far greater danger builds in the frozen north.

The lexicon

How the world works

It is a medieval-style invented world with two continents, Westeros in the west and Essos across the sea, and the story cuts between several storylines at once. Seasons last for years rather than months, so a long winter is a genuine threat to food, armies and lives. Power belongs to great families rather than individuals: marriages, oaths and debts decide as much as swords do. Magic and strange creatures exist but are rare and mostly treated as old stories, especially in the south. The show is adapted from George R. R. Martin's novels "A Song of Ice and Fire," and it is deliberately harsh: promises get broken, and being good is no protection.

Watching it together

Before

Before you start, say plainly that the first episode includes a scene of a woman being forced, and that you are watching together partly so you can talk about it after.

After

at 17 and up

Which character do you think actually deserves to rule, and what would they have to give up to get there?
