What it's about

After her husband's abrupt death, Alice seeks solace with his remaining family, descendants of a leading researcher on demonic possession. As her in-laws transform one by one into creatures that feed on fear, she comes to discover that the vows she took in life survive even in death.

Blood, and plenty of itBlood is not the occasional spatter here, it fills the screen: close to eight minutes of it in total, more than one of them unbroken. Bodies are mangled in close-up and the film does not cut away where you expect it to. That is the genre, and it is what sets the age.
The family turns on herWhat attacks is not a stranger: it is the mother, the brother, the sister-in-law, changing one after another. The faces become unrecognisable while the voices stay familiar. For a younger viewer that is often harder to take than the gore.
Almost all of it in the darkThree quarters of the film plays out in darkness, with around sixty long unlit scenes. The sound does the rest: screams, whispers, silences that something breaks open all at once. You often cannot see what is coming, and that is deliberate.
Blunt language throughoutSeventy-seven swear words in the original and around fifty in the French dub, in a film under two hours. They are not decoration, they are how these people speak to each other once they are frightened.
A glass and a cigaretteThe family meal is well lubricated and cigarettes go round, shown without comment as ordinary adult behaviour. An argument does break out over how much one of them is drinking.

What the movie brings

It is unashamed scare cinema, watched for the jolt and for the relief when it passes.
It puts one woman against what is left of her family, and rests on whether she gives in.
It opens a way to talk about what grief makes people do, and what they refuse to let go of.
