What it's about

The tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family, every child except one, Mirabel. But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family's last hope.

Why 6

Our readingA magical family whose house is cracking, arguments and songs: six alone, five with an adult.
reading
A dark house that cracks apartA lot of this film happens in shadow: a hidden tower, night scenes, and a house that splits and shudders. The images are beautiful rather than gory, but the long stretches of darkness plus the loud cracking and rumbling can unsettle a small viewer, especially near the end when the family's home is in real danger.
shown
Fear on people's facesCharacters scream, cry, and panic more than once, and a vision of the future is presented as something frightening. The emotion is played straight and it lands hard, which is exactly what makes the film good, and also what may need your hand on a five year old's shoulder.
shown
A family that hurts each otherBehind the songs there is a grandmother who pushes too hard, a brother treated as the family shame, and a girl told, in different words, that she is not enough. Deaths in the family's past are spoken about, never shown. Younger children mostly feel the sadness; older ones start to see how love and pressure get tangled.
shown
What looks alarming and isn'tKnives in kitchen scenes, sharp bangs from the breaking house, a fleeting skull image, wine on a celebration table: taken one by one these sound rough, but in context they belong to a warm, musical, funny film. There is no fighting to speak of and no bad language worth naming in the dubbed version.

What the movie brings

A rare picture of a family where the pain is not caused by a villain but by expectations, and where repair is possible.
A heroine whose worth has nothing to do with a talent or a gift.
Colombian music, color, and food, celebrated rather than used as decor.

Watching it together

Before

If the house starts breaking apart and your child tenses up, you can say quietly that nobody in this family gets left behind.

After

at 6 and up

In our family, is there something people expect of you that feels heavy? You can tell me about it.
