What it's about

The story of the miraculous evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain, Canada and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk between May 26th and June 4th 1940 during World War II.

The official rating, firstRated PG-13 in the US (parents strongly cautioned, some material may be inappropriate for children under 13). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.

War that never lets upFrom the opening minutes, gunfire, explosions and burning wreckage press in almost without pause, and the cutting is fast enough that there is rarely a moment to breathe. Fighting, weapons and fire are on screen throughout rather than in a few set pieces, which is what makes this heavy for a younger viewer even though it is not gory.

Death, close and realBodies appear on the sand and in the water, wounded men are carried and bandaged, and the dialogue speaks plainly of the dead and the slaughter. There is very little blood shown, but the sense that these are real young men dying is constant and deliberate.

Dread in the darkLong stretches take place at night, below deck or in flooding, sinking spaces, with screaming faces, silences broken by sudden blasts, and music built to keep your pulse up. Children who dislike enclosed spaces or the idea of drowning will find these passages hard well before the images themselves are shocking.

Rough language, and a cruel momentSoldiers swear the way frightened men swear, including one strong word, and there is a scene where fear turns men against one of their own with real cruelty. It is brief but it is the emotional low point of the film.

What the movie brings

A rare war film that puts survival, not heroism, at the center: getting home is presented as the victory.
It shows courage in ordinary people, civilians who sail into danger because someone has to.
A clear, gripping way into a real event of 1940 that older children often meet only as a date in a textbook.

Before you start, say that this really happened, that the men on the beach were often only a few years older than a high schooler, and that the film will keep you tense on purpose.
