What it's about
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector, and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.

- Death is the whole subjectDying is talked about constantly, in nearly twenty different lines: relatives who are gone, a beloved singer who died young, and later a killing that is spoken of plainly. Nothing gruesome is shown, and the tone is warm and colorful, but a young child who has recently lost a grandparent or a pet will feel this one in the chest. Around the 2nd, 14th and 24th minutes the words land squarely.shown
- Betrayal and a cruel turnAbout two thirds of the way in, near the 66th and 67th minutes, the story turns: someone the boy admired is revealed to have done something genuinely cruel, and a character is put in real danger just after. It is the hardest stretch of the film emotionally, more than visually.shown
- Skeletons, dark places, and being left behindThe land of the dead is populated by skeletons, some faces are strange, and there are shouts and frightened cries scattered through the film. Long dark scenes make up roughly a fifth of the picture, and the boy is often alone in the dark. - Words and background wineCharacters call each other stupid, idiot or useless a handful of times, in family arguments rather than in meanness. Wine bottles and glasses appear at celebrations, and drinking is mentioned in passing. Nothing here needs a talk.shown

- A generous, joyful look at a real Mexican tradition, where remembering the dead is a party and not a gloom.
- It says out loud that families argue, hide things, and can still repair themselves.
- Music as a way of loving people, and a beautiful song your child will hum for weeks.
