The official US rating is TV-MA, and we never go below it. Alone from 17, and not before, even with an adult.

The sweet spot: around 17-18, when you can follow a man who becomes what he does, and judge him without looking away. Why a sweet spot?

Official US rating: TV-MA. In France, zinema would say 16.

What it's about

Walter White, a New Mexico chemistry teacher, is diagnosed with Stage III cancer and given a prognosis of only two years left to live. He becomes filled with a sense of fearlessness and an unrelenting desire to secure his family's financial future at any cost as he enters the dangerous world of drugs and crime.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated TV-MA in the US (mature audiences only). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
Drugs as a trade, addiction as the threadFive seasons of cooking and selling methamphetamine, with a craftsman's care: the lab, the purity, the rivals, the money. Around it, addiction is shown without flinching: Jesse relapsing, his girlfriend choking to death while Walt watches and does nothing, dealers, addicts, a drug den. It is the subject of the series, not a backdrop.
Deaths built to leave a markA body dissolved in acid crashes through a ceiling; a man is strangled with a bike lock in a basement; a throat is cut with a box cutter in front of two witnesses; a face is torn off by an explosion; a child is shot on his dirt bike in the desert; a police officer is executed in front of his brother-in-law. The scenes are short, precise, and they come back every season. Blood holds the screen for close to a minute at a stretch in the hardest episodes.
A man you watch become monstrousThe sick teacher who wanted to protect his family ends up poisoning a child, letting a young woman die and handing his partner to killers. The series never condemns him on your behalf: it follows him, and a teenager can mistake his success for something to admire. That is the real difficulty, more than the blood.
Language, bedroom scenes, tensionSwearing in every episode, a homophobic slur from thugs; suggested sex scenes, a stripper; cliffhanger endings, jump scares, constant tension. None of it goes beyond an ordinary adult series.

What the series brings

One of the great series about lying: how you lie to your family and to yourself, and what it costs at every step, without ever being able to say when there was still time.
A lesson in chemistry and method: Walt works well, and the series shows what it means to do something perfectly, even the worst thing.
A built work: everything planted comes back, each season closes what the previous one opened. A teenager learns to read a story.

Watching it together

Before

Watch at least the first season together: the body in the bathtub and the basement come in episodes 2 and 3, and that is where you decide whether to go on. Afterwards, talk about Jesse more than about Walt.

After

at 17 and up

At the end Walt says he did it all for himself, because he liked it. At what point in the series did you believe him?
