What it's about
Belle and Sebastian is set high in the snowy Alps during the Second World War. The resourceful Sebastian is a lonely boy who tames and befriends a giant, wild mountain dog, Belle – even though the villagers believe her to be ‘the beast’ that has been killing their sheep.

- A dog shot and nursed on screenBelle is taken for the beast killing the sheep: a hunt, a rifle shot, and she bleeds into the snow. Sébastien hides her, cleans the wound, gives her a shot and stitches her up with the doctor's words in his head. What the movie brings
- A friendship that asks for nothing: a boy without a mother and a dog without a master who choose each other, against everyone's advice.
- The mountain as a character: the passes, the snow, the silence and the chamois, filmed wide and at a child's height.
- Resisting without saying so: villagers who smuggle families into Switzerland under the Germans' noses, and a boy who slowly understands what is going on around him.
Watching it together
The film asks what truth we owe a child: talk about what César chose to keep quiet, and why. If your child is scared for Belle when she is wounded, tell them Sébastien knows how to care for her.
