What it's about

Under the direction of a ruthless instructor, a talented young drummer begins to pursue perfection at any cost, even his humanity.

A teacher who humiliates relentlesslyFletcher slaps Andrew in class, throws a chair at his head, insults his weight, his family, his sexuality, makes him play again and again to exhaustion in front of the others. A former student hanged himself, and Fletcher lies about why. This is the subject of the film, it lasts two hours, and it is never defused by humour.
Bleeding hands, in close-upAndrew plays until his blisters burst: split fingers, blood on the sticks and on the drums, hands plunged into a bucket of ice, several times and in close-up. After a head-on car crash he climbs out of the overturned car and runs to play, his face covered in blood.
A hundred and seventeen swear wordsFletcher's abuse drives the dialogue: a hundred and seventeen swear words in the original version, fifty-six in French. Wine at the table, cigarettes.

What the movie brings

A film that asks a question without answering it: was Fletcher right, and the final shot leaves it open.
Work shown as it rarely is: repetitive, painful, with no spontaneous genius.
