What it's about

Smart, sarcastic and a little dead inside, Wednesday Addams investigates twisted mysteries while making new friends — and foes — at Nevermore Academy.

Why 14

The codes, for parents

A gothic teen mystery in which Wednesday Addams, deadpan and fiercely independent, investigates dark events around her supernatural boarding school while reluctantly learning how to have friends.

The lexicon

How the world works

The story is set in a version of our world where supernatural people, called Outcasts, exist openly but live somewhat apart from ordinary humans. Nevermore Academy is their boarding school: uniforms, dorm roommates, cliques, a fencing team and a secret society, all wrapped in gothic architecture. The neighboring town of Jericho has a long, uncomfortable history with the school, and old grudges from the Pilgrim era still shape how people treat each other. Wednesday's psychic visions are unreliable and often arrive at the worst moment, so she solves things mainly by stubborn detective work. Tone matters more than gore: the show is macabre, funny and stylish rather than genuinely frightening, though it does include monster attacks and moments of suspense.

Watching it together

Before

If you watch the first episode together, you will get a good read on whether the darkness feels fun or heavy to your teen.

After

at 14 and up

Wednesday is often unkind to people who like her. Do you think that is strength, or armor?
