What it's about

As a collection of history's worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them.

Why 17

The official rating, firstRated R in the US (restricted, under 17 requires an accompanying parent). zinema never goes below the country's rating: it explains it.
rule
The trenches of 1914, up closeA long night sequence between the lines: knives, hand-to-hand in the mud, a young man shot dead by his own side, wounded everywhere. Two minutes of gunfire and a hundred and fifty fight shots in the film; a father watches his wife die at the start, in front of their son.
Rasputin, and a head that fallsThe monk poisoned, stabbed, drowned under the ice in a scene half dance, half butchery; later a clean beheading and a body falling from a cliff. The film plays cruelty for laughs, which younger viewers cannot decode.
Dark, with the words to matchAlmost half the film in the dark, some forty swear words, aristocrats' whisky and cigars.

What the movie brings

The First World War explained through its crowned cousins: enough to make you open a history book.
A pacifist father and a son who wants to fight, and the film proves both right and wrong.
Servants more competent than their masters, filmed as the real heroes.

Watching it together

Before

Warn that the film changes tone halfway: it starts as a farce and ends in the trenches. That is where the conversation happens.

After

at 17 and up

The duke refuses war, his son wants to go: which one has courage, and which one is right?
