What it's about
Dominic Toretto is a Los Angeles street racer suspected of masterminding a series of big-rig hijackings. When undercover cop Brian O'Conner infiltrates Toretto's iconoclastic crew, he falls for Toretto's sister and must choose a side: the gang or the LAPD.
Why 13

- Guns drawn, shots firedHandguns and a shotgun are pointed and used repeatedly, with long stretches of gunfire on the soundtrack and talk of people being shot. Fights break out at close range, and there are wounded and bleeding bodies as the story turns violent in its last half hour.
- Speed sold as freedomThe whole film is built on illegal street races and truck hijackings at highway speed, filmed to look thrilling rather than reckless, and the characters describe those ten seconds as the only time they feel free. That is the part worth talking about with a teen who is close to driving age.
- Rough talk throughoutSwearing is constant from the opening minutes, in both the original and the dubbed version, along with insults, one homophobic slur, and a scene where a character is publicly humiliated.
- Beer, cigarettes, and a bedroom sceneDrinking and smoking run through the party and garage scenes, drugs are mentioned, and a couple ends up in bed. Nothing is dwelled on, but the atmosphere is adult.
- Loud, dark, and relentlessMuch of the film takes place at night in near darkness, with a driving score, screaming, and cuts every couple of seconds. It leaves little room to breathe, which is a lot for a younger viewer even before the content.
What the movie brings
- A strong story about loyalty and where it stops: the hero has to choose between the people who took him in and the job he came to do.
- It gives a teen plenty to argue about, starting with whether these characters are admirable or just lucky to be alive.
Watching it together
Before you press play, say plainly that the driving here is staged by professionals on closed streets and that in real life these races kill people, then let the film be fun.
